Dog Has Blood in Urine
There is blood in my dog's urine. It just started today while I was at work. Do you think I should take her to the emergency vet?

Hi Elee,
More information is needed.
- How much blood are you seeing? Just a few drops, or more like a puddle?
- Is your dog a female, and could she possibly be in season? If so, a small amount of blood in the urine at this time would be expected.
A trip to the vet may be in order since blood in the urine could be a sign of a urinary tract infection or other injury. Although it's easier said than done, it would be good to take along a sample of your dog's urine with you, so your vet can do some immediate testing.
Hope all turns out well ~~ Kelly
Could Pregnant Bitch Have a UTI?
My Yorkie is 43 days pregnant, and she has a very strong urine odor coming from her vulva area. Could this be a UTI and is there medication that my vet can give her in this delicate condition?
Thank you ~~ Tracey

Hello Tracey,
Yes, it's possible that your bitch could have a UTI, and it's something that your vet should have a look at. Sometimes a bitch will develop the infection after the breeding. A UTI can be treated with antibiotics, but your vet will consider her condition before making a recommendation.
Is she displaying any other symptoms such as urinating small amounts frequently? Does there appear to be any discharge coming from her vulva? If so, these are more signs that she may have a UTI.
If she doesn't show any other signs, then I recommend you give her a bath, and see how quickly the smell returns. Since there is so much extra pressure on her bladder right now she may have simply had a small accident and that's what you smell. If you have any worries at all, let your vet have a look.
Best wishes for your dog's good health and a safe delivery of the litter.
Thanks for your question~~ Kelly
Pregnant Dog Has Blood in Urine
Hello,
I bred my Dachshund for the first time on September 30. She tied three times in three days. She should be about two weeks pregnant now, and she is box trained. We noticed that she had a small blood clot come out in her urine on Saturday night. It happened again last night and today.
Should I be worried? I have heard some people say this could be due to a urinary tract infection, but my is having no trouble urinating. She's acting normally. Please help!

Hi Joni,
This problem is worthy of a vet check. It sounds as though your dog may have a case of cystitis. Cystitis is actually an inflammation of the bladder, usually caused by a bacterial infection, but it can also be caused by stones or a tumor.
Your vet will most likely want to perform a urinalysis, and a bladder culture, so try to bring a sample of your dog's urine if at all possible. Your vet may also be able to palpate her bladder to feel for the presence of stones.
Cystitis is often resolved with the use of antibiotics and a special diet. If the clots aren't due to cystitis, there's a chance there is something going wrong with the pregnancy. I sincerely hope this isn't the case.
Thank you for your question, and I hope your dog's condition is easily resolved.
